Chapter 1—A Short List on the Kitchen Table
Leilani stood in the kitchen looking down at the short grocery list on the table.A bowl of fruit sat beside the paper, catching the light coming through the window.Milk, bread, vegetables—just a few everyday items she needed for the next several days.
It was a little after nine in the morning.Shops along the street had just begun opening their doors.
She read the list once more to make sure nothing was missing. The supermarket was only a few blocks away, close enough to reach on foot.
Leilani folded the paper and slipped it into her women’s leather bag before heading toward the door. The bag rested comfortably on her shoulder, light enough for the walk yet large enough to carry the groceries she planned to bring back.
Outside, the neighborhood had begun its daily routine.A delivery truck stood near the corner cafe while someone arranged chairs along the sidewalk.
Farther down the street, the smell of fresh bread drifted from the bakery.
Leilani stepped onto the pavement and started walking toward the supermarket.
A cyclist passed the intersection while a car slowly pulled away from the curb. The smell of coffee drifted from the café entrance as the first customers of the day sat down at the tables outside.
Before reaching the end of the block she glanced ahead. The supermarket sign could already be seen above the nearby buildings.
Chapter 2—The Walk to the Store
The route to the supermarket passed several small stores. The flower shop stood on the corner.
Buckets of roses and lilies were arranged outside the entrance, their colors bright against the gray sidewalk.A florist worked behind the display, trimming stems and placing flowers into fresh bouquets.
A little farther down the street, the cafe windows were open.Cups clinked against saucers while customers talked over their drinks.
Two people sat near the window with laptops.Another customer waited at the counter while the barista prepared coffee.
Leilani crossed the street and glanced briefly at the folded shopping list again.
The supermarket sign was already visible ahead.
Traffic moved steadily through the intersection while pedestrians gathered near the crossing.
A newspaper stand had just opened nearby. The owner arranged stacks of magazines while adjusting a metal display rack.
Someone purchased a newspaper and walked away reading the front page while crossing the street.
When the signal changed, the small group of pedestrians began moving.
Leilani continued forward toward the supermarket entrance.
The automatic doors opened as she approached.
Chapter 3—Stepping Into the Supermarket
Cool air flowed outward as Leilani stepped inside the supermarket.Bright lights reflected across the polished floor, and the produce section stretched across the front of the store.
A row of shopping baskets stood near the entrance. She picked one up and walked toward the vegetables.
Tomatoes filled one display while lettuce and herbs were arranged in neat rows nearby.A store employee was restocking avocados at the end of the table.
Leilani examined several vegetables before placing them into the basket.
For a moment she opened her women’s leather bag, placing her phone and the folded list inside so both hands were free.
Shoppers moved steadily through the produce section.Someone weighed apples at a scale while another customer compared oranges.
A child pointed toward a container of strawberries while their parent placed fruit into a cart.
Leilani paused beside the strawberries. One berry rolled slightly when another shopper lifted a container from the display.
Across the aisle a worker replaced empty crates with new boxes of vegetables.
More shoppers entered the produce section while carts moved slowly between displays.
Basket in hand,Leilani continued toward the grocery aisles.
Chapter 4—Between the Grocery Aisles
Leaving the produce section behind,Leilani entered one of the long aisles filled with packaged foods.
Tall shelves stretched in both directions.Boxes, jars, and cans were arranged in neat rows beneath bright lights.
She moved slowly along the aisle, reading labels and comparing brands.
Pasta and rice filled one section.Sauces and spices lined another.
Occasionally a shopping cart rolled past, its wheels clicking against the floor.
Leilani added a few pantry items to her basket before moving forward.
The supermarket had grown busier since she entered.Conversations drifted between aisles while carts turned corners and stopped beside shelves.
She checked the list again.
Only a few items remained.
Nearby another shopper reached for a jar of pasta sauce while someone else examined a row of canned vegetables.
Before turning toward the bakery section,Leilani paused beside another shelf and added one more item to her basket.
Then she followed the smell of bread drifting from the next aisle.
Chapter 5—Fresh Bread at the Bakery Counter
The bakery appeared at the end of the aisle. The smell of warm bread reached Leilani before she turned the corner.
Behind the glass counter, rows of loaves were arranged in baskets—round country bread, long baguettes, and darker loaves filled with grains.
A worker moved between the racks, placing fresh bread into the display.
Leilani stepped closer and read the labels in front of the baskets before choosing a baguette.
While standing near the counter she adjusted the strap of her women’s leather bag and checked the shopping list again.
Two customers beside her were deciding between pastries while another employee carried a tray of cinnamon rolls from the kitchen door behind the counter.
The warm smell of freshly baked bread spread across the section again.
Several shoppers gathered nearby while choosing loaves and pastries.
Leilani stepped aside to allow another customer to reach the counter, then turned toward the refrigerated aisles.
Chapter 6—Along the Refrigerated Aisles
The temperature dropped slightly when she entered the refrigerated section.
Glass doors lined the wall, each filled with milk, yogurt, butter, and cartons of eggs.Bright refrigerator lights reflected across the glass surfaces.
Leilani opened one of the doors and reached for a bottle of milk.Cold air drifted outward before the door closed again.
Nearby, a shopper compared two brands of yogurt while another examined a row of cheeses.
A store employee pushed a cart filled with dairy products toward the shelves and began restocking the refrigerators.
Leilani placed the milk into her basket and walked slowly along the aisle, briefly scanning the remaining items.
At the end of the section stood a display of bottled drinks and fruit juices.
She checked the list once more.
Only one item remained.
The checkout counters were visible at the front of the store.
Chapter 7—The Line at the Checkout
By the time Leilani reached the registers, the front of the supermarket had grown crowded.
Several lines stretched across the area while customers unloaded groceries onto the conveyor belts.
She chose one of the shorter lines and waited behind a man holding a basket filled with vegetables.
The cashier worked quickly, scanning items and sliding them across the counter.
Leilani placed her basket on the floor beside her feet while the line moved forward.
A small display of magazines and chocolate bars stood near the checkout counter.
When it was her turn, she lifted the groceries onto the belt.
Bread.
Milk.
Vegetables.
Then she reached into her women’s leather bag and took out her wallet.
The cashier scanned the final item and the receipt printed from the register.
Within a moment the groceries were packed into paper bags.
Chapter 8—Outside the Supermarket
The automatic doors opened again as Leilani stepped outside with her grocery bags.
The street looked different from the one she had walked through earlier in the morning.
Sidewalks were filled with people moving between stores. The cafe tables were now occupied by customers drinking coffee and talking with friends.
Across the street, the flower shop had fewer bouquets remaining in the buckets outside the door.
Leilani paused for a moment near the entrance and shifted the grocery bags in her hands.
A bus stopped near the corner and several passengers stepped onto the sidewalk.
As she walked back toward her building, she noticed how much the street had changed since the morning.Shops that had just opened earlier were now busy with customers, and the pace of the neighborhood had clearly shifted into the afternoon.
After adjusting the weight of the bags, she began the walk home along the same streets she had taken earlier.
Chapter 9—Back in the Kitchen
A few minutes later, Leilani reached her building and walked up the stairs to her apartment.
Inside, the kitchen looked exactly the same as when she left earlier that morning.
She placed the grocery bags on the counter and began unpacking them.
Vegetables went into a basket on the table.
Bread went into the container near the stove.
Milk and yogurt were placed into the refrigerator.
When everything was arranged, she folded the shopping list and placed it back inside her women’s leather bag along with her keys and wallet.
For a moment she stood beside the counter looking at the empty grocery bags.
She folded them and placed them neatly inside a cabinet.
Outside the window the street continued moving through the afternoon.
The grocery trip had taken less than an hour, yet it marked another small routine in the rhythm of the day.
